Good day Friends of VisionK,
What a quick start to 2010 it has been!
The past month or so has been quite a tumultuous time in South African history but we believe everyone has a responsibility to make South Africa work. Therefore we are looking forward to building lasting relationships and can’t wait to see the kids grow into responsible and mature members of their communities – changing not only their futures, but that of their own children and families.
Please enjoy reading the newsletter attached.
I am Phathuxolo Jozana living at Kayamandi, Stellenbosch.
I am one of the Vision K learners of 2009, Vision K has played a vital part in my life by changing the kind of person i was to a human being. Today i am studying Civil engineering at CPUT, that was the thing i have not dreamed of because my marks were not good enough in grade 10 and 11. But we got motivated, we got suggestions of how to make good marks (that is to form a group and study very hard), there was a group we have formed but we did not have a place to study after the library have closed, and there we got a place to study form Vision K. This year i have made it. My personal behaviour has changed because of the tutoring we have got in Vision K.
The most thing Vision K has made for me i will never forget it, my parents where confused that where they will get money for my registration but Vision K answered their confusion. There is a lot to be said about this programme, it is not just a programme, it is the best of all i have been in.
We kicked off the year with a camp for fourteen Grade 10’s on the second weekend of February of this year. The camp was held in the familiar valley of Grabouw on the Back to Basics campground. The weekend was filled with surprises, adventure, mosquitoes, little sleep and lots of fun. We introduced the vision and plans for the year with our new teenagers on the Friday. They were quick off the mark and we learned the different charters of the young pupils in the team building exercises. We were caught off guard by the enthusiasm and determination. The guys were very focused in the different courses that back to basics had to offer. The camp site is rigged with action and fun obstacle courses, low ropes, a great dam and lovely trails. We enjoyed the cool waters of the local dam and spent much time cooling down laughing at the facilitators paddling canoes without ores.
We were blessed by a visit from Dean on the Saturday eve where he shared the vision and origin of Vision V and Vision K. We later had a concert where the teenagers and leaders had different skits that we prepared. This went off like a bomb and we were all in stitches from the laughter. On the last night we walked the line of life were by we send out small teams in the forest in the middle of the night only having a thin role leading them through the forest. On the Sunday we shared our dreams and what we would all like to do when we grow up. We ate like kings on the camp and there was always more than enough food for everyone. We all made our own food the first evening and this ended up a roaring success. We ended leaving the camp site on Sunday afternoon dirty, smelly, and tiered but with great smiles.
A trust was built between the new and young Vision V team and the never tiring, energetic young ones. Swinging, dangling and screaming through the air like a James Bond action sequence kept the facilitators perspiring and the local Vlottenburgers begging for more. The camp was exactly what we needed to start of with and we at Vision V are so expectant and excited for this year. All in all the camp was a total success and we are exited to walk with these young people this year and the years to come.
We would like to thank Dean, Gerrit and the food team for all the planning, hard work, dedication and compassion.

The weekend of the 5th of February was a weekend of not only fun and games but also challenges and learning. The new group of vision k grade 10’s embarked on a 2 day journey that left all feeling tired yet somewhat accomplished.
Right form the start team work was a major emphasis. The first challenge of the weekend was a food auction. The leaders left the fate of the night’s dinner in the hands of their team as they partook in an auction for their supper. The Dreamers did well for themselves and ate and abundance of rolls, sausages and braai bread, while the other teams had enough tomatoes and tomato sauce to smother all the other food.
Saturday saw an early start with some morning aerobics before the days challenges began. There were many team building activities that day and some found them easier than others. However, all three teams had something to share about what they learned. The mighty eight stars especially had to realise the unique value of every member of the group. A break for lunch saw the start of a mud fight that ended soon after things got ugly. One girl landed up with a pile of mud in her eye, but being as tough as she is, things ended well.
The annual vision k camp concert took place on the last night of camp. All teams presented their talents, the Survivors giving their version of today’s police system. The leaders pulled out a few tricks themselves that left some heads hurting and others blushing. Overall, it was a night of fun and good laughter.
Sunday morning came but the energy of the entire group was finished. After a lesson on goal setting Vision K enjoyed a lovely brunch cooked by the famous Lizelle. Once the tummies were full, the team packed up and headed back to Stellenbosch.
The weekend ended as an overall success thanks to the challenges, the bonding and the food, of course.
On Friday 29 January 2010 the leaders for Vision K and Vision V went to Pringle Bay for a fun-filled working weekend. We kicked the weekend off with a few bonding sessions such as sharing a few facts about oneself, playing the Ha Ha game and preparing supper together. It turned out to be a very late night as we stayed up sharing more and more stories.
Saturday started with a small breakfast and then the work started. We had group discussions about what will be expected of us and the Grade 10s throughout the year. After a lunch break we had time to get to know one another more by talking and playing board games. Balderdash was a hit. Some very brave leaders also dared to swim in the ice cold waters of the Atlantic Ocean while the others just enjoyed the view.
We carried on with the group discussion as soon as everyone had had enough of the beach. Supper was once again prepared as a team followed by another few teambuilding exercises. 30 seconds was the game of choice as well as a few brain teasers. The brave stayed on to listen to some hair raising ghost stories. As soon as the scary stories ran out we started to share some funny and strange life experiences. Yet again it turned out to be a very late night.
Sunday morning we finished our group discussion and had an amazing brunch. We ended our very cool weekend with cleaning the house and packing up.
The weekend turned out to be very enlightening and motivating. We arrived there as a group of people with our own plans for the future and we left there as a family with only one dream: to see the teenagers of VisionK and VisionV develop and reach their own dreams.
